A time of day I look forward to is putting our 5 year old son Cai to bed. Our final routine involves a story before sharing 3 things that we are grateful for that day – “thankful thoughts”. The previous posting will give you an insight into why. We then have what we call our “lovely thoughts”.
Now I should explain that some time ago Cai used to have nightmares and to try and curb these we created the idea of planting nice thoughts in his head. What really excites me is that he usually has wonderful dreams that are based on his “lovely thoughts”. What is more is that over time he has come to realize that he can choose what he thinks about; he knows at some level that he is responsible for his own thoughts and can control them. For someone who still struggles with this concept as an adult and sometimes likes to blame someone else for what I am feeling and even thinking; this is a good time to apologize to my wife, I am excited that my son may have more control of his destiny because he has felt what it means to create his own dreams.
